Rocky Mountain Showdown

Dating back to 1893 the Rocky Mountain Showdown is an annual college football game of bragging rights between the University of Colorado and Colorado State University. Buffs or Rams? Hope you’re getting ready for this weekend because the two teams are kicking off their seasons with a bang against one another.

The two will be playing in the 81st Rocky Mountain Showdown this Saturday, September 4th at Invesco Field, so get your tickets now before they’re gone. Colorado has dominated the series winning 59 of the contests to Colorado State’s 20, though State did win last year’s game 23-17. Could that have been the start of a long run of Colorado State domination? I guess we’ll just have to see what happens this weekend.

The game starts at 12:00 p.m., so you better get out there early if you plan on tailgating. Do anyone of you plan on going to the game Skye 2905 residents?

If you liked movies like Gladiator, Troy and 300 then you’ll probably like the Roman war epic Centurion. The film is about a splinter group of Roman soldiers fighting for their lives behind enemy lines after their legion is decimated in a devastating guerrilla attack. The film opened in Greece in April, but will open in select theaters in the U. S. (including Denver) on September 3rd.

But wait, there’s an advanced screening on Tuesday, August 31st at 7:30 p.m. at the Landmark Esquire Theater (590 Downing St., Denver). All you’ve got to do is print out the FREE pass and walk into the theater dressed as a Roman warrior and enjoy the film. You don’t really have to dress up, but it would be nice to see!

I do recommend you getting there early because movie companies usually overbook advance screenings (I’ve been turned away too many times before). So go ahead and “Take it! It’s Yours!” Be sure to come back and let us know how it was Skye 2905.

Root on the Rocks

Esmil Rogers will make his sixth start of the season against Jair Jurrjens and the National League East leading Atlanta Braves today at a 1:10 MDT start time. The Rockies have already taken the first two games of the series from the Braves, winning both games by a run. CarGo has been on a tear as of late and Todd Helton continues to stay focused at the plate (even after a fastball up in from Venters).

Head to Coors now!

As you know every game is crucial and needs to be won from here on out for Colorado to have a chance at the postseason. They are currently 10.5 back of the NL West leading San Diego Padres, who has seen an emergence from their young pitchers all season. With 37 games left in the season, overtaking the Padres is a tall task, but these Rockies are no strangers to Goliath. Just think back to 2007 when we made it to the World Series against the Boston Red Sox!

Let’s root on our home team as they attempt to sweep Jason Heyward and the Braves to today. Go ahead and take the rest of the day off and head up to Coors. If you can’t make it today, you have to be there on Friday as they start a weekend series against division rival, the Los Angeles Dodgers. Will you be there Skye 2905?

A Cinematic Space Odyssey

Posted on August 20, 2010 · Leave a Comment

Planetary systems, stars, clouds of gases – it’s all very complicated to the average human and something only Stephen Hawking can comprehend. But what exactly does humanity know about space? Planets? Or the galaxy that we live in?

Denver Museum of Nature and Science dinosaurs.

Come see Dinosauria

I’ve always been fascinated with space and the ultimate question, “What is out there?” At the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, you will be able to explore the vast space through the Planetary shows that feature exciting cinematic views of stars, information on black holes, and the galaxy that holds our “little” home.

Whether your interest is stars, black holes or just the overall structure of our universe, you will be able to find a show to fit your tastes, or enjoy all of them. They also have a show for the little ones so they aren’t left out. After the show, they also have other exhibitions for you to explore such as the Prehistoric Journey, Egyptian Mummies and Discovery Zone (for the kids).

Show times can be found on their website and the museum is located on 2001 Colorado Blvd in Denver. Who knows, it might bring out the budding astronomer in you! You think we should have a Skye 2905 field trip?

Denver Eats

Beautiful Denver!

Culinary Connectors has started something revolutionary in the Denver area that I think is highly important to each and every one of you. Well, it’s essentially important to every one in the world, but especially you. Yes you. Everyone needs to eat, but why just stuff your face to stuff your face? Let’s do something different Denver. Culinary Connectors has given us the means to do just that.

Every Friday they offer a Walking Tour through a Denver neighborhood (different each week) for stops at four different restaurants to taste what they have to offer. A brilliant way to liberate Denver’s palette. I do my best to get out and try different establishments, but it can sometimes get pricey especially if you don’t know if you’ll like the place or not. So, why not get out and sample new foods?

After your stop at the four restaurants you always end at Happy Hour–a plus. Now that I’ve got your attention, I can really sway you to my side. Denver 2 for 1 offers BOGO tickets for this event every week! Get your significant other, friend or sibling and get out and see the Highlands! And be sure to come back home and tell everyone about this event!

Get Ready to Scoutmob Denver!

Posted on August 11, 2010 · Leave a Comment

Are you ready to Mob, Denver!

The mobile deal leader Scoutmob is ready to venture to the illustrious city of Denver and bringing the entire “mob” with them. What’s Scoutmob you ask? It’s a site that finds absurd deals around your city that you can use to get anywhere from 50 to 100% off. Off what you say? Depending on the deal, you can score half off restaurants in the heart of the city or maybe 75% off a trip to the spa. There’s only one catch (and it really isn’t a catch at all), you have a certain amount of time to catch the deal. You have 24 hours to grab the deal, but once you get it you usually have about a month or two to redeem it (time varies).

You really have nothing to lose when it comes to Scoutmob, it’s all free! Plus, you can get the app for you smartphone and use the discount right there in the establishment! Put your hand down. You shouldn’t have any more questions! Just get “mobbed” with Scoutmob Denver, Skye 2905!

My husband can sleep on command. I’m not kidding. Just say the word and he’s off to la-la land, flinging “Z’s” all over the place.  Then there’s me.  I toss. I turn. I tie the sheets in little knots with my knees for about an hour until finally, if I’m lucky, I fall asleep.

The anxiety over sleep is what I fall victim to.  I count the number of hours I have and with each minute, the worry grows.  The worry keeps the rest at bay leaving me to lay there, staring at the ceiling while my husband enjoys a solid slumber.  Makes me want to smack him with a pillow!

My preference is to tackle health issues naturally, if possible.  For this reason I avoid sleep aids.  I’m not opposed to them, I would simply prefer a natural solution.  If you’re like me and occasionally have a hard time getting to sleep, the answer could be something as simple is a snacking strategically!

Red Peppers as a sleep aid

Yahoo! Health suggests some foods that are known to help in the sojourn to dreamland.  Let’s give these a try and see what we find!

  • Red bell peppers
  • Nonfat popcorn
  • A handful of pretzels
  • A handful of sesame seeds
  • A 4oz glass of unsweetened cherry juice
  • 1 glass of wine
  • Oatmeal with sliced banana
  • 1 cup of plain yogurt with 2 tablespoons of mixed nuts

How about you? Do you have any tips to help?

What’s a Fur Ball Worth?

Posted on August 5, 2010 · Leave a Comment

What's the cost per year to care for a cat?

Pets bring joy, love and even stability into our lives. But they aren’t cheap! According to this article by MSN titled, What Your Pet Really Costs You, the average small dog costs approximately $8,000 over the course of its lifetime. And a cat? Pet owners can expect a tab for that tabby that’s closer to $10,000! That’s a heap of cash to support a fur ball!

And still we do it. We part with our hard earned money to buy plastic bedroom slippers, beef sticks and pig ears in spite of the shedding, scratching and shameless begging and … why? Because, dang it all anyway … they’re cute and cuddly and completely blind to our shortcomings. When a DOG does the math, our failures don’t add up to diddly when we walk through the door at the end of the day.

The same could be said of we humans. When WE do the math, it becomes rather obvious.  Let’s start from the top. How much is a daily tail wag worth per year? $100 on a day when you rock? $1,000 on a day when you REEK? More? And for cat lovers, what’s it worth to have the feeling of a rough cat tongue on your nose? Or that sweet little purring that comes from pure satisfaction? Can anyone put a price tag on something that balances the entire universe – or at the least, your entire apartment?

Consider financial donations to help local shelters

Balanced universe aside, we’d be less than responsible pet owners if we didn’t thoroughly consider the financial aspect of pet ownership BEFORE falling bum-over-tea kettle for an adorable, furry bundle of love. And if, after all the math, it’s clearly not feasible to adopt a pet, consider making financial contributions to shelters like Colorado Greyhound or Polaris Siberian Husky Rescue. You can get to know both organizations at Yappy Hour tomorrow night!

Animals in the area need you! Whether you adopt, foster, donate cash for volunteer at a nearby shelter, your contributions make a world of difference.

Head over to Yappy Hour tomorrow night. It’ll be a great place to talk to others about pet ownership, fostering or volunteering!
